A man from Paynesville is behind bars today after authorities say he sparked a wild response by grabbing his child and driving away from an arranged parental visit.
Micky Curtis Lang, 35, was arrested Saturday on an outstanding warrant from Stearns County, said Rochester Police Capt. John Sherwin, and faces terroristic threat and domestic assault charges here.
The case began about 8:15 p.m., when law enforcement received multiple 911 calls about a suspected kidnapping from Wal-Mart South, 25 25th Street S.E.
When the dust had settled, authorities learned this: A 35-year-old woman from Watkins agreed to meet Lang at a public place so he could see his 6-year-old son.
The couple began to argue in the entryway of the store, the report says; Lang grabbed the boy and ran to his car as the woman yelled for people to stop him, saying Lang was “kidnapping my kid.”
Several citizens chased Lang, Sherwin said, and when he reached his car, other drivers attempted to block his car from leaving. Instead, Lang drove forward “through some shopping carts” and fled north on Third Avenue.
A motorist attempted to follow Lang — who also called police, then hung up — but lost sight of him.
An officer spotted Lang’s vehicle at the Holiday Station store at Fourth Street and Fourth Avenue Southeast, where he was taken into custody.
The child was returned to his mother, the report says, adding that Lang has joint custody of the boy.
