A 33-year-old Detroit man was arrested Monday morning after being accused of taking his 3-year-old son from the boy’s mother, who has sole custody.

The mother, of Pontiac, contacted the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office around 9 a.m. Monday to report that her son had been taken the previous night. The mother attempted to open the man’s car door to retrieve the child but was unable to do so.

The mother showed paperwork proving she has sole custody of the child, and a court clerk verified it. Deputies contacted the father, and he refused to return the boy, officials said.

The sheriff’s office’s fugitive apprehension team found the father in Wayne County and arrested him. Charges are pending.

The child was picked up by a family member and returned to the mother.
