1506066344September 22nd, 2017 – Cross border marriages can be one of the most blissful experiences in one’s life as it offers the opportunity for cultural diversity, sharing and mixture among other things. However, with cross border marriages may come divorce as with any other regular local marriage and with all the intricacies of a divorce. Cross border in this essence refers to two persons from two different countries having a relationship, starting a partnership or any kind of relations together. Cross border divorces invariably carry more complex elements and has such needs to be dealt with carefully.

Adele M Lim author of ‘Love With Passion and Perspective: Pearls from a cross-border divorce and The Hague Convention’ uses the book as a platform to delve into the deep and troubling realities of cross-border divorce. Complexities such as which country should the children stay in, who should have custody of the children and at times some children are abducted by either parent and taken to their home country. It is referred to as abducting because it would mean that one parent is unaware or have not given consent for the child to be taken out of the country.

The book outlines Lim’s personal struggle with cross-border divorce as well as the struggles of other families. The Hague Convention is relevant to these situations as it is the international treaty which seeks to protect children from the harmful effects of international abduction by providing a legal avenue for a parent to seek the prompt return of his/her child or alternatively to make arrangements for securing the effective exercise of rights of access to the child. Though the Convention is to make it a bit easier it does have loopholes that make the situation more challenging.

In Lim’s words, she states “I hope to spread awareness about The Hague Convention as it relates to relocating families and parental abduction. I wish to inspire new possibilities, that despite all the pain experienced, we can collectively hold each other in our deepest intentions to receive the wellness that we all deserve, and shift into the goodness coming out of the separating international family.”
