Cyprus: Marie Eleni’s father says they are no longer in Cyprus

Speaking to reporters for the first time since forcibly taking his daughter from her mother in Nicosia over 55 days ago, Leif Torkel Grimsrud, says he and little Marie Eleni are no longer in Cyprus and will soon be traveling to Norway.

He also insists he was alone when he took his four-year-old daughter and only wants to offer her what he considers a better life in his native Norway.

Speaking to Norwegian journalist Gordon Andersen, the 48-year-old did not reveal where he and Marie Eleni are now, only that they are no longer in Cyprus.

He also insists that there were no hooded men involved in Marie Eleni’s April 27 abduction, saying that he took her on his own and was only wearing sunglasses at the time. Grimsrud says the child was pleased to see him and that they spend their days playing and swimming.

Grimsrud appears to be receiving professional assistance towards his hopes to get legal custody of the little girl and said he anticipates a new custody trial once they reach Norway.

However, also speaking to reporters, a lawyer representing Marie Eleni’s mother, Greek Cypriot Lena Ioannou, noted the Norwegian courts had already said that since the child’s permanent residence was in Cyprus, they had no jurisdiction over her custody.

The lawyer also noted the anguish Marie Eleni’s mother has been in since her child was taken. She also stands by her testimony that two masked men had taken Marie Eleni, the mother’s lawyer said.

The safety and welfare of missing Marie Eleni has been raised at European Union institutions, Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou recently said.
